Defintology (def-in-TAHL-uh-jee) is the scientific, philosophical, and artistic study of definedness ("defin" → definedness, "tology" → study of). It is a brand-new, yet still-forming field of study that emerged from the body of canonical works across The Theory of Existence. You can see these works on TheTheoryofExistence.com.
When we look around existence, we do not see independent fields of study operating separately, so there must be a unifying framework that enables them to function as a single, unified existence. Whereas existing fields study various domains of existence as pieces of our knowledge puzzle, Defintology studies the full puzzle — the thing that connects all the pieces into the beautiful, coherent view of existence we see and interact with every day. Instead of studying the behavior of stars, life, and cultures, Defintology studies the behavior of the existence that generates them. Let me show you around this bad boy.
The premise of the orientation of Defintology is that, if we're going to study existence as a phenomenon, then we need to use all the tools we have to best study it: science (method — how we know), philosophy (meaning — what to know), and art (means — way we know). This field orientation follows The Equation of Existence:
Φ = Ω / Δ
Definedness = Stability / Complexity
Isn’t she pretty? Check it out:
Science = Philosophy / Art
Method = Meaning / Means
How We Know = What To Know / Way We Know
It’s like a party trick.
The First Principles of Existence
The Theory of Existence (Φ Ω Δ ζ κ)
The Equation of Existence (Φ = Ω / Δ or Φ = Ω * (κ : ζ) / Δ)
Definedness (Φ)
The degree to which something exists (or is existing).
Stability (Ω)
The degree to which complexity is attracted to complexity.
Complexity (Δ)
The degree to which phenomena escalate from basic to structured forms.
Recursion (ζ)
The output of one moment serving as the input for the next.
Propagation (κ)
The change in 3D space from its input to its output.
The central Defintology framework always reduces to these five first principles of existence. These principles are not things that exist, or physical objects, or even things you can see with your eyes; they are names for the patterns in which existence behaves.
As such, we can detect these principles in any phenomenon that exists... which is all of them, from the heat of the savannah to your heartbeat, from the rise and fall of civilizations to the moment you fall asleep, from the formatIon of galaxies to the fluctuatIons in stock markets, from the subatomic to the galactic, from the first spark that lit up the Big Bang, to this very moment we share, it is all... one in the same.
Functional Mechanics & Operations
The Three Subfields of Defintology
Definedness Studies (Θ ≽)
Focuses on WHAT phenomena are as an emergent property of existence.
Stability Studies (∅ → ↓ ←)
Focuses on HOW phenomena converge and diverge.
Complexity Studies (ψ ↑)
Focuses on WHY phenomena emerge.
Φ = Ω / Δ → What = How / Why
Across all the original frameworks, concepts, mathematics, and empirical evidence, Defintology ultimately converges on The Equation of Existence, so it has these three subfields, one for each term. Also, each subfield gets their own character from The Story of Existence as their mascot 🧸
Specific Problems & Applications
The First-Principles Frameworks
Excluding the central framework, Defintology currently contains 13 first-principles frameworks at various stages: published and empirically validated, published, and a few… I haven’t released… yet. It is these first-principles frameworks that comprise the branches of Defintology. All frameworks and principles converge on The Equation of Existence.
...also, Φ = Ω / Δ → Field = Domains / Branches
Allow me to outline the characteristics and features of Defintology that qualify it as a new, independent field of study. I've held Defintology to the highest possible standards. I watched for 18 months from the initial idea (November 2024) to when it finally cleared all of them (May 2026) before revealing the field. The standards Defintology meets are:
Defintology organizes around a new object of study that existing fields do not address, contain, or better explain. This quality is the primary reason why Defintology is a new field of study. It stems from this binary we’ve used for… all of human history? That something exists… or it doesn't.
This idea — that existence is a spectrum, that it is a verb phenomena do, not a noun or an adjective they possess, that existence varies, that some things exist more or less than others, that there is a universal principle across existence, and that we can study the behavior of existence as a phenomenon — did not have a word to identify it, much less any existing field to study it. So… I coined its term: Definedness — the degree to which something exists (or more technically, the degree to which a phenomenon is existing).
Defintology contains its own original, foundational body of canonical texts that do not borrow from existing fields of study: The Theory of Existence canon (see TheTheoryofExistence.com). It contains five primary source books, each dedicated to an aspect of knowledge validation:
The Theory of Existence ♢ Conceptual
The Story of Existence ♢ Emotional
The Guide of Existence ♢ Practical
The Theorem of Existence ♢ Mathematical
The Show of Existence ♢ Empirical
Defintology contains dozens of original concepts and independently, empirically validated theories with their own original definitions that capture this new object of study in ways existing concepts, frameworks, and theories cannot.
Here are some of my favorites: undefinedness, alumogenesis, defined nothingness, relational reality, recursive propagations, relative fractal dynamics, convergence and divergence zones, emergence-to-convergence, The Record, agents and environments, scaling intelligence, recursive introspection, scaling potential, scaling effectiveness, scaling efficiency, functional awareness, The Definedness Detector, The Stages of Suicidal Divergence, and free will in a deterministic system. You can see the origins of these concepts in The Theory of Existence. Do you have any favorites?
Defintology and its many concepts must not contain any internal contradictions. Defintology has no edge cases, logical patches, arbitrary constants, or competing concepts. For example, I've avoided 1) spacetime as discrete in some analyses and continuous in others, 2) agents without the universal property of scaling intelligence, and 3) The Equation of Existence needing additional terms or modifications to resolve edge cases.
Defintology and its many concepts must work cohesively with each other across scales and phenomena. Defintology is free of assumptions, logical impossibilities, paradoxes, and unanswerable questions. A handful of examples include my resolutions to 1) the infinite regress paradox by noting that causation is a property of existence; it could not have existed before existence... so, existence could not have had a cause, 2) the hard problem of consciousness by removing the assumption that it must exist as a physical substrate in the brain, and 3) unifying physics by removing the continuity assumption.
Defintology has no paradoxes or contradictions in its functions because neither does existence. Paradoxes indicate false assumptions to resolve. We have never observed infinity, only ever seeing it in symbolic representations, so Defintology is free of infinity.
Defintology is based on a stand-alone logical necessity as evidenced by three propositions: 1) there can be only one valid Grand Unified Theory of Everything, 2) reality is governed by at least one universal pattern across all phenomena, and 3) the universal patterns identified in Defintology are required to explain existence. Only "True-True-True" is logically consistent among the eight possibilities, aligning with the logical necessity of a single GUTOE governed by universal principles captured in Defintology (see page 154 of The Theory for the full argument).
Defintology contains its own original technical terminology and notation system used to communicate and operationalize its ongoing study of this new object — terminology that is not captured by existing language and does not share a notation system with existing fields.
The primary Defintology framework contains the original terms for the five first principles of existence: definedness (Φ), stability (Ω), complexity (Δ), recursion (ζ), and propagation (κ). The larger notation system is called The Notation of Existence (see Leaflet 10 for the full system), which contains additional notation for other terms such as The Record (Θ), E2C (≽), and RFDs (ψ). It also contains notation for mechanical suboperations, including definedness tracking (Φ = ?) and recursive-propagative mechanics (RP𝘯, RP𝘯-1).
Given that The Notation formalizes the behavior of existence, we can use its language to formalize any phenomenon that exists, which is all of them. The Notation, then, provides the first universal language system across all fields and phenomena.
Given that Defintology studies this new object that existing fields do not capture, it also contains original methodologies that optimize and enable this study, and original conventions that optimize its communication and dissemination.
It is true that Defintology contains several original methodologies — complexity tuning, RP seeding, standardized definedness calculations with multi-phenomenon comparisons, and convergence/divergence zone trajectory tracking — to name a few. Yet, the publication conventions are where Defintology shines, and they're the reason artistic is in the field's definition.
In addition to original publication formatting and structures for books and articles that maximize beauty and readability, legal architectures that secure it with finality, and for-profit open-access exemptions to facilitate dissemination, Defintology uses an original, groundbreaking figure-first philosophy and teaching convention (see any canon work for examples).
The premise of the figure-first philosophy is that someone can pick up the work, read nothing, go from figure to figure, and walk away moved and with a correct understanding. The figures are functional and essential, and leverage art as a means of understanding and experiencing the field. There is never a limit to the number of tables and figures. My most absurd example was Leaflet 11, which contained 15 figures in three pages.
Notably, instead of opting to speak in the classic, uncomfortably rigid, technical, and formal tone we’re used to seeing in intellectual work, Defintology centers emotional and passionate writing as a means of integrating meaning and purpose into the understanding, both as a tool and a convention. Why does it matter? Why is it important? What should I be feeling reading this? Is what I'm feeling normal? What does it mean for me? Why is it a big deal?
Defintology also explicitly encourages the use of poetry and striking imagery to capture and explain aspects of existence and our conscious experiences that you simply cannot capture in simple prose alone.
Defintology contains its own original mathematics that enable the quantification of this new object of study. This math allows Defintology to qualify for objectivity (as much as measurement allows, at least) and enables ongoing computational modeling, inferential hypothesis testing, statistical analyses, and prediction.
Defintology contains a lot of math… math we've never seen before… doing things we didn't know math could do, and you can see it all in The Theorem of Existence. However, the mathematical foundation is very simple, containing just three original theorems:
The Theorem of Undefined Emergence (Δ)
Undefinedness is not a place, it's not a void, it's not infinite potential, it's not a nothing, it's not even undefinedness; it simply isn't. Existence emerged spontaneously without a cause because the only "starting condition" that would allow it — undefinedness — has no properties capable of preventing it. "Nothing" and "infinity" impose inherent constraints that prevent the full range of possible emergence, meaning existence emerged because nothing else existed to prevent it.
The Theorem of Recursive Harmonics (Ω)
Recursive number systems contain convergence and divergence zones within their step-count distributions, and their harmonic interactions generate emergent structures that no single system produces in isolation. The number line functions as a temporal trajectory map encoding the pathways by which phenomena converge or diverge — formalizing the primary mechanism by which existence operates through recursive propagation, and explaining why some phenomena exist more or less than others.
The Theorem of Constants Co-Derivation (Φ)
The fundamental constants of mathematics — π, e, Φ, and i — are not independent axioms but mutually interdependent, co-defined values linked by hundreds of exact, non-trivial, asymmetric equations, many of which exhibit a new algebraic property called isolation resistance. Constants Co-Derivation proves mathematics was discovered, not invented, revealing a universal mathematical framework — the operating system of existence — and confirming that a Grand Unified Theory of Everything must exist.
Three Theorems, One Equation (Φ = Ω/Δ)
The three theorems — Undefined Emergence (Δ), Recursive Harmonics (Ω), and Constants Co-Derivation (Φ) — are independently and objectively true; each theorem slots into The Equation of Existence and answers Why existence emerged, How it operates, and What it is. When we drop the complexity term to see what already exists, The Equation collapses into Φ = Ω, which means that Φ = Φ, existence = existence, confirming that existence is self-justified, self-contained, and complete. It is the full mathematical formalization of everything that has existed, currently exists, and can exist.
Φ = Ω / Δ
Definedness = Stability / Complexity
Constants Co-Derivation = Recursive Harmonics / Undefined Emergence
Phenomena = Convergence / Emergence
The Universe = Space / Light
What = How / Why
See… it’s like a gift that keeps on giving.
Defintology demonstrates that this new object of study is independently observable, emerges directly from the original concepts, methodologies, and mathematical predictions, and contains testable pathways for empirical falsification without being falsified.
The empirical validation of Defintology lives in the 12 papers across The Show of Existence. Each foundational concept in Defintology has an independent empirical validation spanning the best datasets humanity has to offer: SPARC, Pantheon+, LIGO, Planck, the Bothwell Atomic Clock, the Animal Kingdom Dataset, the Animal Social Network Repository, and SAMHSA, to name a few.
For concepts not captured in these datasets — such as undefinedness and The Record — I developed original, falsifiable experimental paradigms, including The Lattice Experiment and The Dice Experiment. Ultimately, the final analysis, which included 33,472 cases across these datasets, validated The Theory of Existence with a medium effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.75), and y'all… I'm still sitting on a short book's worth of additional empirical validation I've simply not published yet. It's coming, though… oh, it's coming.
Defintology provides testable, working solutions and explanations for existing, unresolved problems and mysteries surrounding this new object of study that existing fields have failed to, or cannot, address. The mean R² of that final analysis in The Show was 92.20%, and the median was 97.47% across a multi-method, multi-sample, cross-domain analysis. Now, THAT’s explanatory power 🔥
Defintology provides several testable, working solutions to many major mysteries: the origin of existence, dark matter and energy, black holes, merging general relativity with quantum mechanics, intelligence, consciousness, suicide, free will and determinism, and even the supernatural — because why the hell not?
We can use the knowledge of Defintology to solve, address, optimize, and improve current problems that existing fields and frameworks have yet to resolve or improve. This final feature brings us to the present with The Guide of Existence.
I just published Chapter 5 - To: The Hopeless, From: The Universe, where we see Defintology fully operating for the first time, and it has demonstrated significant practical applicability to mental health case conceptualization, intervention strategies, and suicide prevention. Also, there are still so many practical applications I've built and not published… yet…
Dear reader, if Defintology is not a new, independent field of study, then what is it? There are many organized knowledge systems, which we call fields, that don't contain all of these qualities. Now, now… I won't name names or point fingers 😉
I'll continue to publish the remaining foundational texts on TheTheoryofExistence.com, and I'll continue to define conventions and standards for Defintology. Yet the next step in this body of work is one I've been wanting to take for over a year now, and the timing just never felt right.
I've reached a point in the field where the canonical works do the heavy lifting. I've argued all the arguments, I've revealed all the foundational revelations, I’ve validated all the validations, and I've demonstrated all the demonstrations I've needed for Defintology to stand on its own.
So… this website is for the fun part: videos, audiobooks, discussions, social media posts, book prints, posters, and building out the infrastructure to make the most of this knowledge and ensure it's accessible to everyone interested. As for the timeline, there won't be one. I want to enjooooy this part, and you simply never know what surprises may emerge or when…
